Train tracks and railway equipment might look like an interesting place to explore or play, but they can be extremely dangerous for people of all ages.

This Rail Safety Week, take a moment to talk to your kids about rail safety:

Stay off railway tracks and railway property.
Never climb on rail cars, equipment, or other railway structures.
Always stay alert and keep a safe distance from trains and tracks.
Use designated railway crossings and follow all signs and signals.

The Village of Clive is located on Treaty 6 territory and within the present-day Red Deer Métis District of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

Residential schools were not only in distant parts of Canada. One operated here in central Alberta.

The Red Deer Industrial School operated from 1893 to 1919. Children were taken there from Indigenous communities, and some never returned home. The term “industrial school” referred to a type of residential school that combined classroom instruction with manual and vocational training.

Learning about this school reminds us that the residential school system is part of our local history, too.

Understanding what happened close to home is part of reconciliation.

This Rail Safety Week, the Village of Clive is reminding everyone that there’s no undo button when it comes to rail safety.

Whether you’re driving, walking, cycling, or working near railway tracks, make safe choices every time:

Stop at railway crossings and follow all signs and signals.
Look and listen for approaching trains.
Never trespass on railway property or use the tracks as a shortcut.
Stay focused and avoid distractions around crossings and tracks.
No photo or selfie is worth the risk, stay off railway property.

Please be advised that the Village Office will close at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 16 for the remainder of the day while staff attend Emergency Management Training.

Kick it to the Curb begins on September 13th which aims to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Residents are
encouraged to place their unwanted but reusable items leftover from the garage sale on the curb marked with a ‘FREE’ sign. Please explore the village to find treasures that are marked with a ‘FREE’ sign.

The Village will pick up and dispose of any items left on the curb on Friday, September 18th.

Please note that large/heavy items such as furniture, mattresses, appliances etc. will NOT be picked up by the Village.

Property taxes are due and payable without penalty if payment is received by the Village Office on or before August 31, 2026. An 8% penalty will be applied on September 1, 2026, to all current taxes remaining unpaid after August 31. An additional 10% penalty will be applied on December 1, 2026, to all current taxes remaining unpaid after November 30.

The August 31 deadline and associated penalties do not apply to property owners currently enrolled in the Village’s Tax Installment Payment Plan (TIPP).

A new pedestrian crosswalk has been installed on 50th Street at the Clive Baptist Church (4716 50th Street).

Crosswalk signage is coming soon, but drivers are asked to please use extra caution and watch for pedestrians in this area.

A few important reminders:

The speed limit reduces to 50 km/h once you enter Village limits. Please slow down as you come into Clive.

Back to school is just a few weeks away, which means we’ll soon see more children and families walking, biking and crossing our streets.

Stay alert, slow down and be prepared to stop for pedestrians at the new crosswalk.

The Towns of Bentley and Penhold, along with the Village of Clive, are working together on a Shared Regional Growth Strategic Framework.

Supported by an Alberta Community Partnership grant, this collaborative project will help each community plan for future growth in a way that reflects their unique needs, while building stronger connections, shared learning, and local capacity.

A key component of the project will be engaging members of each municipality to gather community insights around what growth and development mean to them.

Please be a responsible pet owner and ensure your dog and/or cat does not run at large and be sure to remove any defecation. Failure to do so can result in a $100 fine.

Cat Traps – residents experiencing unwanted cats can contact Animal Control Services at 403-506-9380 to coordinate setting a cat trap and collection of any cats.

The 2026 Assessment and Property Tax Notices have been mailed. Property taxes are due by August 31, 2026, to avoid penalties. You can pay at the Village Office using cheque, debit, or cash. Credit card payments can be made through the PaySimply portal at clive.ca, but please note that a 2.5% service fee will apply.

This year’s notice is a combined Assessment and Tax Notice. If you wish to dispute your property assessment, you must file a complaint by August 14, 2026. Complaints must be submitted using the required form and must include a $50 appeal fee. For more information, please contact the Village Office at 403-784-3366.

The August 31 payment deadline and penalties do not apply to residents enrolled in the Tax Installment Payment Plan (TIPP).

Residents are reminded that it is the owner or occupant’s responsibility to ensure that their trees, shrubs and bushes are properly trimmed and cut back to prevent obstruction on the sidewalk, alleys, or streets to pedestrians or vehicles. Thank you for your cooperation keeping our roadways and sidewalks clear. As stated in Traffic Bylaw #499-12, a minimum clearance of 7.5 feet must be maintained above sidewalks, and 13.5 feet above alleys and roads.

Clive FunFest will proceed rain or shine. If weather conditions are unfavorable, some activities may be moved indoors to ensure everyone can continue to enjoy the event safely and confortably.

The parade is scheduled to proceed as planned unless there is a significant downpour or severe weather. A final decision regarding the parade will be made on Saturday morning and communicated as soon as possible thereafter.

In 2026, Alberta proudly celebrates the 40th anniversary of Seniors’ Week. Inspired by the vision of the late Alice Modin, Seniors’ Week has been recognized since 1986 to celebrate the contributions seniors make to enhance the quality of life in Alberta. Forty years ago, Modin began a campaign to start a seniors’ day in Strathcona County that helped pave the way for this annual event.

Property Maintenance Reminder

The Village of Clive is reminding residents that property owners are responsible for keeping yards and properties clean and free of garbage, debris, and unsightly materials pursuant to Bylaw No. 420-98 – Unsightly and Nuisance Bylaw.

Residents are asked to please:
• Remove accumulated waste and debris
• Dispose of garbage and large items properly
• Maintain yards to help keep Clive safe, clean, and welcoming

Please note that unsightly properties may be subject to enforcement action under the bylaw.

Waste and large items can be taken to the Prentiss Landfill during operating hours.

On April 28, we observe the National Day of Mourning; a time to remember and honour those who have lost their lives, suffered injuries, or experienced illness as a result of their work.
