November 1–7 is Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week in Alberta.
As temperatures drop and we turn up the heat, it’s a good time to make sure your home and family are protected.
Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas that can be deadly. Knowing the warning signs could save a life.
Signs of CO exposure include:
- Headache, dizziness and fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weakness or loss of muscle control
- Watering or burning eyes
If someone is experiencing symptoms:
- Leave the building immediately.
- Call 911 for emergency assistance.
- Do not re-enter until it is safe.
If you suspect carbon monoxide, even if no one is feeling ill:
- Get everyone outside into fresh air.
- Call ATCO Gas at 1-800-511-3447 for assistance.
- Do not re-enter until the building has been checked and declared safe.
A simple reminder: Test your carbon monoxide alarms regularly, keep vents clear of snow and debris, and have your heating equipment inspected.
A few simple precautions can help keep your family safe this heating season.
